Question

Inflating a balloon seems to violate Boyle's law. Why?

Open in App
Solution

Boyle's law:-

  • Boyle's law states that the pressure which is exerted by a dry gas is inversely proportional to the volume occupied by the gas.
  • This happens only at a constant temperature and for a given mass.
  • Mathematically representing this would be like: P1V
  • Here P= Pressure of the gas and V= Volume of the gas .

Inflating a balloon:-

  • When we inflate a balloon, the volume of the gas keeps getting increased.
  • But on the other hand, the pressure of the gas also keeps getting increased.
  • This is a violation of Boyle's law, as according to this law the pressure should decrease as the volume is increasing.
  • Thus following this law the pressure should decrease as we are increasing the volume of the gas, but this does not happen.
  • Hence inflating a balloon seems to violate Boyle's law.
