Ficus is a genus with nearly 850 species of trees, shrubs, vines in the family Moraceae. Collectively known as fig trees this shows a special type of inflorescence known as the Hypanthodium where the receptacle is fleshy and forms hollow ball like structure with an apical opening. Three types of flowers develop on the inner surface of the receptacle with female flowers towards the base, male flowers towards the orifice and short styled sterile female flowers in between. The multiple fleshy fruit thus formed has the ovaries borne within an enlarged succulent concave or hollow receptacle and is referred to as syconium.
