Invaginations or infolding of the cell membrane were observed in chemically fixed bacterial samples when observed under electron microscope. These are called- mesosomes- they were also thought to have different functions. But later, it was discovered that the infoldings were caused due to chemical fixation techniques used in the lab- and that these mesosomes were not present in the bacterial cells originally.
