The correct option is D is passive and it occurs through apoplast pathway
There are 2 phases of uptake of mineral ions.
The initial uptake of mineral ions is passive as it occurs through apoplast. The apoplast pathway is the movement of ions through the outer or free space (outside the cell membrane) between the cells. This passive uptake of ions does not utilize energy and is usually carried out via ion channels (transmembrane proteins).
The second phase is active in which ions are absorbed slowly into the inner space that is into the cellular matrix. This is called symplast pathway. This utilises energy which happens via pumps.
