Question

Inorganic salt (A) which is hydrated and light green in colour and gives following reactions
(i) (A) decolourizes acidified MnO4 and turns acidified Cr2O27 green.
(ii) (A) in aqueous solution gives light green turbidity which dissolves in dil.acid.
(iii) (A) gives white ppt with BaCl2 solution insoluble in conc. HCl. 2.78 g of (A) gave 2.33 g of white ppt.
(iv) (A) (B)(blackishbrown)+(C)+(D)oxidesofsulphur
(C)oxidation−−−−−−(D)
(C) turns acidified K2Cr2O7 solution green
(B) + HCl (E)deepyellow
(E) + KCNS red colour
Inorganic salt (A) is identified as FeSO4.7H2O.

Solution

By (iii) , it is clear that (A) has SO24
(A) decolourises MnO4/H+
(A) turns Cr2O27/H+ green
(A) has Fe2+
(A) is FeSO4.xH2O
(iii) FeSO4.xH2O(152+18x)(2.78)+BaCl2BaSO4233(2.33)
152+18x233 = 2.782.33
x= 7
(A) is FeSO4.7H2O
Explanation :
(i) MnO4+8H+5Fe2+5Fe3++Mn2+colourless+4H2O
(ii) Cr2O27+14H++6Fe2+6Fe3++2Cr3+green+7H2O
(iii) FeSO4+2H2OFe(OH)2greenturbidity+H2SO4
Fe(OH)2+H2SO4FeSO4soluble+2H2O
(iv) 2FeSO4Fe2O3(B)+SO2(C)+SO3(D)
2SO2(C)+O22SO3(D)
Cr2O27+3SO2+2H+2Cr3+green+3SO24+H2O
Fe2O3+6HCl2FeCl3yellow+3H2O
