During inspiration, the volume of the lungs increases.

Due to the increase in volume, the pressure inside the lungs (intrapulmonary pressure) goes down and falls below the atmospheric pressure. As a result, the air moves into the lungs from the atmosphere.

On the other hand, expiration takes place when the pressure inside the lungs is greater than the atmospheric pressure.
