Solution

Mohl's experiment:

  1. In Mohl's experiment, the area of leaf not exposed to KOH exhibited positive starch tests, indicating the presence of the CO2 as well as the occurrence of photosynthetic process in that area.
  2. However, the part of the leaf exposed to KOH did not have access to the CO2 so there was no photosynthesis happened and it tested negative for starch.

Other chemicals which can be used instead of KOH in the experiment:

  1. Soda-lime (NaOH & Ca(OH2))
  2. CaO (limestone)
  3. Potassium pyrogallate

Final Answer: Instead of using KOH, soda-lime can also be used to detect the presence of CO2 during photosynthesis.
