Within the snail intermediate host, a number of asexual developmental stages occur as with the flukes. For the schistosomes, there are two generations of sporocysts, the mother and the daughter sporocysts. The daughter sporocysts give rise to an infective larval form, the cercaria, which is released from the snail intermediate host into the water. So, larva passes through an intermediate snail host before the next larval stage of the parasite emerges that can infect a new mammalian host by directly penetrating the skin.
