Sexually reproducing animals generate two types of gametes: larger non-motile female gamete and smaller, motile male gamete. In aquatic animals, male gamete can swim in water to reach the female gamete. These animals show external fertilization. Terrestrial animals like birds and mammals show internal fertilization. In these animals, the male gamete is directly deposited in the genital tract of the female animal. The female gamete is retained in the body of female animal and the fertilization is internal.
