Question

Iodination of benzene with iodine is carried in presence of an oxidising agent. Why?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student

Iodination Of Benzene is difficult to synthesise. Because the reaction is reversible and the HI produced is a strong reducing Agent to reduce Iodobenzene back to Benzene.

Hence this reaction is carried out in the presence of a strong oxidising agent like Iodic acid or Nitric acid that oxidises the HI formed in the reaction to Iodine, Enabling the reaction to Proceed in the forward direction.
