Solution

Different separation techniques are present depending on the property of the substance to be separated

To separate iodine from salt, we can use sublimation technique

Iodine is a sublimable substance, that can change into a gaseous state directly from solid-state and salt is non-sublimable substance

  • The mixture of iodine and salt taken in a china dish and covered with an inverted funnel (stem of the funnel closed using a cotton).
  • The stem of the funnel covered with cotton to prevent the escape of iodine vapours.
  • When the mixture is heated, iodine being a sublimable substance undergoes state change from solid to gas and rises.
  • On the cooler sides of the funnel, the vapours solidify and can be separated from the mixture.
  • Salt will remain within the china dish.

Thus, to separate salt and iodine we can use the sublimation technique.
