Rule of solubility:

The main rule of solubility is LIKE DISSOLVES LIKE.

  • The above rule means polar compounds are soluble in polar solvents like water, ethanol and non-polar compounds are soluble in non-polar solvents like hexane.
  • As all ionic compound consists of ions, thus they are considered as polar compounds. Hence, ionic compounds are soluble in polar solvent.
  • On the other hand, all covalent compounds are non-polar substances and thus are soluble in non-polar solvents.

Therefore, Ionic compounds are soluble in POLAR solvents whereas covalent compounds are soluble in NON-POLAR SOLVENTS.
