Question

Irrigation without proper drainage of water is harmful for the growth of crops. Why?

Open in App
Solution

Irrigation is carried out to supply the plants with an adequate amount of water. There should be proper management of the water supply and drainage during the process of cultivation. Excess of water may result in suffocation of the plant roots. There will not be proper aeration of the root region and the beneficial bacteria and other microbes will die. This will result in no conversion of the organic matter and thus, there will be no nutrients available. The plants will be more prone to damage by microbial diseases and pests due to more amount of water. So, it is necessary to maintain the proper supply of water and drainage of water in order to allow proper growth of plants.
