Question

Is 6 kg object is suspended by a vertical string from the ceiling of an elevator which is accelerating upwad @2.18 metre per second square, what is the tension in the string?

Open in App
Solution

The tension in the string – the weight of the object is the net force on the object.
Weight = 6 * 9.8 = 58.8 N
T – m * g = m * a
T = m * g + m * a = m * (g + a)
T = 6 * (9.8 + 2.18) = 6 * 11.98 = 71.88 N
When the elevator is accelerating upward, the tension in the string is supporting the weight of the object and causing the object to accelerate upward. So, the tension should be greater than the weight.
71.88 > 58.8N
