Is 89 the multiplication inverse of -118. Why or why not?

Open in App
Solution

Verify the multiplication inverse :

The multiplicative inverse of a number N is represented by 1N

Therefore, x is the number and x' is the multiplicative inverse then x×x'=1

Given that the the multiplication inverse of -118 is 89

Therefore the multiplicative inverse of -118=-98 is

x×x'=1-98×x'=1x'=-89

Therefore x'=-8989

Hence 89 is not a multiplication inverse of -118
