Solution

  1. A catalyst is a substance that is added to the reaction for speeds up the chemical reaction by reducing the activation energy, without getting consumed in the chemical reaction.
  2. A catalyst is not consumed in a chemical reaction. It lowers the activation energy.
  3. It only provides the platform for the reaction.
  4. It joins the reactants for a small time and helps them to join with each other.
  5. When reactants join together the catalyst separates from them and the product is formed.
  6. For example: 2CH3-Cl+2NaDryetherCH3-CH3+2NaCl, in this reaction, dry ether is a catalyst, and the reaction named as Wurtz reaction.
