Is a cup of tea a homogeneous or heterogeneous mixture?

Open in App
Solution

Homogeneous mixture:

  • Any substance that exhibits uniformity in its composition and properties throughout its mass is known as a homogeneous mixture.
  • Example - Sugar solution

Heterogeneous mixture:

  • Any substance that does not exhibit uniformity in its composition and properties throughout its mass is known as a heterogeneous mixture.
  • Example: Muddy water, Sand,
  • A cup of tea is a homogeneous mixture, this is because all the components of tea i.e., water, sugar, and tea leaf extracts create uniformity in the composition and properties throughout the mass of the tea.
  • There is no boundary of separation between the different components of the tea as a cup of tea does not contain tea leaves.

Hence a cup of tea is a homogeneous mixture.
