Question

Is a triple bond longer than a single bond?

Open in App
Solution

Checking if a triple bond is longer than a double bond

The length of the bond depends on the bond strength. It is inversely proportional to the bond strength, Higher is the bond strength, shorter is the bond length. We know the triple bonds have the highest bond strength as they are the most difficult to break. While single bonds have the least bond strength and the bond can be broken easily. Therefore, triple bonds have a shorter bond length as compared to that of single and double bonds.

Hence, a triple bond is not longer than a single bond.
