Question

Is ABA an auxin?

Open in App
Solution

Abscisic acid:

  1. Abscisic acid is referred to as ABA. Abscisic acid is a growth inhibitor hormone in plants whereas auxin is a growth promoter in plants.
  2. It prevents growth by promoting senescence or dormancy.
  3. When the environment is unsuitable for seed germination, it delays germination and causes a state of dormancy.
  4. It is also known as the stress hormone because it enables the plant to survive adverse environmental conditions.
  5. The ABA concentration rises in dry leaves and encourages stomata to close when there is a shortage of water.
  6. Therefore, ABA is not an auxin.
