Question

Is ATG a start codon?

Open in App
Solution

Start codon:

  1. The sequence of nucleotide bases that initiates the process of translation is called the start codon.
  2. In the nucleus, DNA acts as a template and mRNA is synthesized. This is called transcription.
  3. The sequence of each three-nucleotide base on mRNA is called a codon.
  4. Each codon is recognised by tRNA and it carries an amino acid according to it during translation.
  5. The first codon that is recognised in mRNA is AUG so it is called start codon.
  6. The leading strand of DNA has nucleotide has sequence same as mRNA but DNA has thymine instead of uracil.
  7. So for DNA start codon is ATG.
