Question

Is bacteria smaller than protists?

Open in App
Solution

Protists are larger in size as compared to bacteria (monera).

Bacteria:

  1. They are prokaryotic lifeforms.
  2. The cell might be rod-shaped, spherical (coccus), comma-shaped (vibrio), or spiral in shape (spirillum).
  3. They are unicellular and microscopic.
  4. Membrane-bound organelles aren't present.
  5. They have 70s ribosomes.
  6. The cell wall is made up of peptidoglycan and is stiff.
  7. They have flagella or pili.
  8. They have both autotrophic and heterotrophic modes of nutrition.
  9. Examples, Lactobacillus, Vibrio cholerae, etc.
  10. The size of a bacterial cell is 1-5 microns

Protista:

  1. These organisms are eukaryotic and unicellular.
  2. They have a nucleus that is membrane-bound, as well as other membrane-bound cellular organelles.
  3. For movement, they have pseudopodia, cilia, or flagella.
  4. They demonstrate both autotrophic and heterotrophic nutrition
  5. Examples include Amoeba, Euglena, Paramecium, etc.
  6. The size of a cell of Protista may range from 5 μm to few centimeters

Hence, Protists are larger in size as compared to bacteria (monera).
