Detergent is a substance that has cleansing properties in water.
Detergent is common soap.
Soap is defined as the Sodium and Potassium salts of long-chain fatty acids.
In the hard water, due to the presence of Calcium and Magnesium ions, an insoluble salt of fatty acids of Calcium and Magnesium ions is formed which is known as scum.
These scum stick to the fabric due to which cleaning is difficult.
Therefore, synthetic detergent has stronger cleaning power than soap and can be used in hard water.
