Question

Is biomass harmful to humans?

Open in App
Solution

Biomass:

  1. Burning biomass can release harmful gases into the atmosphere like carbon monoxide (CO) and other carbon-containing gases.
  2. These harmful gases lead to headaches, dizziness, nausea, and high concentrations may lead to premature death.
  3. Burning biomass for electricity releases NO & NO2 and also releases cancer-causing chemicals.
  4. Soot is the dangerous chemical that is released by burning.
  5. On inhaling soot, it enters deep into the lungs and causes heart and lung problems.
  6. Natural decay of biomass may increase methane levels, but it is not toxic.
  7. While the increase in methane levels will decrease oxygen levels, it will cause suffocation.
  8. It causes respiratory diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, tuberculosis, and asthma attacks.
  9. It may cause health issues in a pregnant woman by inhaling the polluted air.
  10. It also causes perinatal mortality and morbidity.
