Question

Is chemisorption reversible or irreversible?

Open in App
Solution

Chemisorption: Chemisorption or Chemical adsorption is a type of Adsorption.

  • Adsorption of atoms, ions, or molecules from a gas, liquid, or soluble solids to a surface is called adsorption.
  • Chemical adsorption (Chemisorption) and physical adsorption (Physisorption) are two types of adsorption.
  • Chemical adsorption is a type of adsorption in which the surface and the adsorbent undergo a chemical interaction.
  • In chemical adsorption, new chemical bonds (ionic or covalent) are formed at the contact surface of the adsorbent and the adsorbent.
  • This can be considered an irreversible process due to the formation of new chemical bonds.
  • Macroscopic phenomena such as corrosion, as well as microscopic effects related to heterogeneous catalysis, where the catalyst and reactant are in different phases, are examples.
  • Hence, Chemisorption is an irreversible process.
