Question

Is CO2 an Ionic Compound?

Open in App
Solution

Compound: When two or more elements are chemically combined in a certain ratio of mass, the product obtained is known as a compound. When elements combine, some individual properties of the elements are lost and new properties are acquired in the newly formed compound.

Ionic compound: An ionic compound is a compound formed mostly between a metal atom and a non-metal atom.

  • Ionic compounds are compounds made up of ions.
  • These ions are atoms that gain or lose electrons, giving them a net positive or negative charge.
  • Metals tend to lose electrons, so they become cations and have a net positive charge.
  • Nonmetals tend to gain electrons, forming anions that have a net negative charge.

Carbon dioxide(CO2): Carbon dioxide is a chemical element that can be found in the atmosphere.

  • It is found in the gaseous state at room temperature.
  • It contains one atom of carbon and two atoms of oxygen.
  • The bond between the atoms in a carbon dioxide molecule is a polar covalent bond.
  • In a carbon dioxide molecule, one carbon atom is joined by four covalent bonds to two oxygen atoms, each with two covalent bonds.
  • The carbon dioxide molecule is held together by the strong C=O.
  • Carbon forms double covalent bonds by sharing oxygen electrons.
  • CO2 is a compound that is formed between two non-metal atoms, carbon ,and oxygen.
  • Carbon and oxygen both are non-metals.
  • The nature of CO2 is covalent nature.
  • Hence, CO2 is not a ionic compound.
