Question

Is copper a semiconductor?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Copper is not a semiconductor.
  2. It is used in semiconductor technology, even though it is not a semiconductor.
  3. Although it is not a semiconductor, copper is still used in semiconductor technology.
  4. Because copper has unconditional conductivity, it is often used as a connection between components of integrated circuits (ICs), eliminating propagation delays and using less power.
  5. As a result of copper's ability to kill semiconductors interconnects made of copper are usually covered in a barrier metal layer.
  6. This is because if copper diffuses into the semiconductor components of an IC, it degrades their semiconductor properties and interferes with the proper operation of the corresponding transistors.
  7. As a result, a layer must exist between the copper and the silicon.

Hence, Copper is not a semiconductor.
