Question

is corrosion of metal an exothermic reaction or an endothermic reaction ??

Open in App
Solution

Every process in the nature occur due to decrease in free energy. The product with minimum free energy is the most stable product. Other products are metastable(will converted into stable product).

Now let us look at corrosion, corrosion is actually the oxidation of an element. While in nature the metals(elements) are found in ores/compounds.

i.e. in their stable state.

We extract metals from these ore by the processes which consume energy. Although these metals(extracted) are in metastable state. So have a natural dendency to get oxidised (corrode).

Hence during corrosion energy evolve. It is the same amount of energy which is consumed during extraction of metals. So corrosion is always exothermic in nature.
