Question

Is deceleration the same as a negative acceleration?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Acceleration in the direction opposite to the direction of velocity is always known as deceleration. Deceleration always slows down the pace. However, negative acceleration is simply an acceleration in the opposite direction according to the selected coordinate system.
  2. The opposite of acceleration is not deceleration. There is no doubt that the temporal rate of change of velocity is not negative. The decrease in speed, or the magnitude of velocity, is the result of deceleration. Deceleration is the acceleration that is opposite to velocity in one-dimensional motion.
  3. Example: Deceleration always means slowing down or decreasing speed on the other hand negative acceleration can indicate either decreasing or increasing speed.

Hence, deceleration is not the same as negative acceleration.
