Pyrolysis is decomposition brought about by heating. Production of charcoal, and roasting and some other cooking methods involve pyrolysis.

In destructive distillation, pyrolysis occurs, but then the volatile components of the mixture are separated and collected. Petroleum cracking is a huge application of destructive distillation.
