Question

Is DNA recombination an advantage or disadvantage?

Open in App
Solution

Genetic recombination:

  1. It is the rearrangement of the sequence of DNA.
  2. It occurs during meiosis when gamete formation occurs.
  3. During the pachytene stage of prophase I parts of homologous chromosomes are exchanged between non-sister chromatids.
  4. This process is known as crossing over.
  5. It causes variation due to new allele combinations.
  6. Variations are differences in the phenotypic or genetic make-up of different organisms.
  7. Variations result from recombination during the creation of gametes, mutation, or environmental influences.
  8. Some of these variations are beneficial and lead to better adaptation.

As a result, recombination is beneficial and is an advantage.
