Question

Are E Coli archaea or a bacteria?

Open in App
Solution

Difference between archaea and bacteria:

  1. Membrane lipids in bacteria are ester-linked and unbranched while in archaea they are ether-linked and branched.
  2. Formylmethionine is the starter tRNA in bacteria, however, methionine is the initiator tRNA in archaea.
  3. In archaea, histone proteins are connected with DNA, whereas in bacteria they are not.
  4. The phosphate backbone of DNA in bacteria is glycerol-3phosphate, whereas it is glycerol-1-phosphate in archaea.

E.coli is a coliform, Gram-negative bacteria and not archaea.
