The electrolytic cell works by a non-spontaneous redox reaction through the application of electrical energy. Therefore, it is an electrochemical cell. It is widely used to decompose chemical compounds, in a process called electrolysis.
Through this device, an electric current is passed which decomposes water into oxygen and hydrogen gas, is known as Electrolysis of water.
