Question

Is energy a scalar or a vector quantity?

Open in App
Solution

Scalar & Vector Quantity:

  1. A scalar quantity is defined as the quantity which possesses only magnitude whereas a vector quality possesses both magnitude and direction. So, scalar quantity has no particular direction.
  2. Energy is defined as the capacity of a body to do work.
  3. Energy contained in a body has no direction associated with it, thus energy is a scalar quantity.
  4. Energy can be added or subtracted using the simple algebraic method, so vector algebra is not required for it.

Hence, energy is a scalar quantity.
