Question

Is Energy a Scalar or Vector Quantity

Open in App
Solution

Scalar and Vector quantity

  1. A scalar quantity is one that has no direction and just has a magnitude.
  2. A vector quantity is one that has both a magnitude and a direction.

Energy

  1. We can define energy as the work done by the body.
  2. Energy has magnitude but not direction. Therefore it is a scalar quantity.
  3. We generally call energy as work done by the body.
  4. Energy is not vector quantity but the energy can flow from one body to another.

Energy formula

W=F×d[whereW=workdone,F=force,d=displacement]

Energy is a scalar quantity, as it has magnitude only.
