They are divided into two categories; gram-positive and gram-negative, depending entirely upon the nature of the cell wall and the stain they take in.
Gram-positive: The cell envelope of gram-positive bacteria comprises of the cell wall, cytoplasmic membrane and capsule.
If the bacteria stays purple, they are gram-positive.
Gram-negative: The cell envelope of gram-negative bacteria generally comprises cell wall, cytoplasmic membrane, outer membrane, periplasmic space and the capsule.
If the bacteria turns pink or red, they are gram-negative.
