Question

Is fertilization possible without pollination in flowers?

Open in App
Solution

Pollination:

  1. Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma of a flower within the same plant or a different plant.
  2. Pollen grains carry the male gametes and the female gametes are present in the ovules in the carpels.

Fertilization:

  1. Fertilization is the fusion of male and female gamete to give rise to a zygote.
  2. The male gamete must be transferred to the female gamete for fertilization in flowering plants. The process of transfer of male gamete is pollination.
  3. Hence, if pollination does not take place, fertilization will not occur.
