Question

Is fire matter ?

Open in App
Solution

Fire is the result of COMBUSTION, a chemical reaction. During the process of combustion, FLAMES are produced and flames consist primarily of carbon dioxide, water vapor, oxygen and nitrogen. Fire emits heat and light. The glowing, dancing flames that we see when something is burning are simply gas that is still reacting and giving off light. When most of the molecules are ionized, it is known as Plasma.

Since matter can be defined as “anything which occupies space and has mass or weight”, we can say that fire is a 'matter' because it occupies space and since it is a mixture of gases, it must have some mass. The light and the heat produced by the flame is energy.
