Question

Is Friction A Self Adjusting Force?

Open in App
Solution

Self-adjusting force

  1. It refers to a force that can adapt to changing circumstances.
  2. It has the ability to raise or decrease in response to system changes.
  3. Then compare our forces to the definition to see which force behaves in this manner.

Static friction

  1. When two items come into contact with each other, static friction occurs. Static friction occurs when the surfaces of two bodies are in touch with each other and a force is applied to one of them, even though the body is at rest.
  2. The static friction will attempt to keep the body at rest. When an external force is applied to a body, static friction adjusts the magnitude to match the applied force and attempts to keep the object at rest.
  3. So, we can say that static friction is a self-adjusting force because it does not have any fixed magnitude or a fixed direction, but it will adjust the force according to the applied force.

Hence, only static friction is a self-adjusting force since it does not have a set magnitude or direction and adjusts to the applied force.
