Question

Is friction an impulsive force?

Open in App
Solution

Explanation:

The force exerted by two colliding bodies on one another functions very briefly, providing a strong but momentary push . This is referred to as an impulsive force. The impulsive force is substantially stronger than any other force at the time and works on an object for a very short period of time during a collision or explosion.

Therefore,

  1. Since, μCoefficientoffriction=FFrictionalforceNNormalforce. (only moving slowly because no sliding friction force is equal to the applied force resistance friction).
  2. Friction will be impulsive only when normal force becomes impulsive because friction is proportional to normal reaction.

Hence, friction is an impulsive force only when normal force becomes impulsive.
