Question

is frictional force conservative force ? Explain.

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Friction force is non conservative and it turns kinetic energy into heat.

This can be easily found considering that in a conservative field, the work needed to move from point P to point Q does not depend on the chosen path.

Friction is by definition a force that opposes to motion, so the longer the path between point P and Q, the higher the work (integral of the force with respect to displacement) so it cannot be conservative.
