Question

Is glycinato a bidentate ligand?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Bidentate ligands are those which can donate two pairs of electrons to a central metal atom.
  2. Glycinato is a bidentate ligand because it is formed with two groups one is the amino-NH2 group and the other is a carboxylate ion group-COO-.
  3. The structure of glycinato is given as-

As in the above structure, it is clear that glycinato has two donor atoms oxygen and nitrogen and both can donate their electrons hence it is a bidentate ligand.

Hence, Glycinato is a bidentate ligand.
