Is honey, jelly , rubber band a solid or a liquid??

Open in App
Solution

Rubber band is solid. It is not important that a solid cannot change shape. The only thing important is that their molecules should be closely packed. On applying force a solid may change its shape as in case of rubber band. But as soon as the force is removed, it comes back to its original shape. Rubber bands are solid because they their molecules are close to one another and perfectly sets in the definition of solids.

Honey is liquid when it is procured. But gets crystallised subsequently. Few varieties like mustard honey get crystallised within 8 to 15 days after procurement whereas others like acacia, eucalyptus etc. Honey takes few months to get crystallised.

Hence, remember not solid but crystallised. It can be converted back to liquid by simply keeping honey jar in warm water.

Jelly is actually a semi rigid structure suspended in a liquid, which we call a “Colloid”. Jelly is usually made of gelatin, which is a protein. And protein, as we all know is a solid at room temperature. The gelatin is a sol (liquid) when hot, and a gel (solid) when cooled.
