Question

Is Hydra radially or bilaterally symmetrical?

Open in App
Solution

Symmetry:

Radial, bilateral, and asymmetric symmetry are the three types of symmetry seen in organisms.

  1. Radial symmetry is a type of symmetry in which a plane is drawn along the center axis of the organism, separating it into two equal halves. Ctenophora and cnidaria are two phyla that have this form of symmetry.
  2. Bilateral symmetry is a sort of symmetry in which the two sides are identical. The body is divided into identical left and right sides in this form of symmetry. The majority of phyla, including annelids, nematodes, arthropods, chordates, and others, have this symmetry.
  3. Asymmetry in organisms is described as the lack of a specific sort of symmetry. Simple phyla like Porifera demonstrate this.

Hydra:

  1. Hydra is an asexually reproducing organism that produces progeny by budding.
  2. Hydra is cnidarian, which means it has radial symmetry.
