Question

Is it necessary for a transmitting antenna to be at the same heightas that of the receiving antenna for line-of-sight communication? ATV transmitting antenna is 81m tall. How much service area can it cover if the receiving antenna is at the ground level?

Solution

Given: The height of the transmitting antenna is 81m.

In line-of-sight communication, transmitting and receiving antennas are not always at the same height.

The distance to the horizon is given as,

d T = 2Rh .

Where, R is the radius of the earth, d T is distance to the horizon and h is the height of the antenna.

The service area covered can be given as,

A=π d T 2 =π( 2Rh )

By substituting the values in the above equation, we get

A=3.14×( 2×6.4× 10 6 ×81 ) =3255.55× 10 6 m 2 3256 km 2

Thus, the service area that can be covered is 3256 km 2 .
