Question

Is it necessary that in reduction reaction a element should gain one or more electrons and in oxidation reaction a element always loses one or more element electrons. My doubt in these type of reactions there is loss or gain of electrons happens only sometimes or all times

Solution

Dear student,

Reduction is always associated with a decrease in oxidation number( in simple language, charge) which is possible only when electrons are gained by the species. The positive character of the species is reduced
Oxidation, on the other hand, is always associated with an increase in oxidation number which is possible only when electrons are removed from the species. The positive character of the species is increased.

Hence, the process of oxidation and reduction always take place simultaneously. They cannot occur alone.

Keep asking
