Question

Is it possible to change the temperature and pressure of a fixed mass of a gas, without changing its volume?

Solution

Yes, it is possible to change the temperature and pressure of a fixed mass of gas, without changing its volume.

This can be explained as follows:

  • As pressure is increased Volume is decreased as pressure and volume are inversely proportional to each other i.e.;P1V
  • In order to stop this volume from decreasing as we want to keep it constant, temperature can be raised.
  • This is because, temperature is directly related to volume i.e., TV. More the temperature, more the volume as kinetic energy increases.
  • So by increasing the pressure and simultaneously increasing the temperature to the extent that the decrease in volume due to an increase in pressure can be compensated by the increase in temperature, volume can be kept constant.
  • Here, both, temperature and pressure are changing to keep the volume of a fixed mass constant.
  • Hence, it is possible to change the temperature and pressure of a fixed mass of gas, without changing its volume.
