Question

Is it possible to liquefy CO2 gas at 500C? Give a reason.

Solution

Critical temperature: It is the temperature above which a gas cannot be liquefied whatever pressure may apply.

Liquefication means the conversion of the state of a substance from gas to liquid by applying temperature and pressure.

  • The critical temperature of Carbon dioxide (CO2) is 31.10C.
  • 500C is greater than the critical temperature (31.10C) of CO2 so It cannot get liquified at 500C.

Therefore, it is not possible to liquefy CO2 gas at 500C.
