Question

Is ketogenesis catabolic or anabolic ?

Open in App
Solution

Ketogenesis is a catabolic process.

Ketogenesis

  • Ketogenesis is a metabolic pathway that results in the production of ketone bodies, which provide the body with an alternative source of energy.
  • In normal circumstances, the body produces small amounts of ketone bodies capable of producing 22 ATP each, which are primarily regulated by insulin.
  • Energy provided by the ketone bodies are useful while starving for a long time, for prolonged physical exertion during the neonatal period.

Metabolism

  • It is the process in which our body converts food to energy.
  • Metabolism can be divided into two based on whether it uses energy to build something or release energy by breaking something.
  • Breaking complex molecules with the release of energy is termed as anabolism and building bigger molecule from smaller ones by utilizing energy is termed as catabolism.
