Is rational or irrational? Justify your answer.
Define rational number :
A rational number is a number, which can be written as , where and are integers , and the H.C.F. of and is equal to .
Let us assume is ration number, that is,
………………………………………….equation
where and are integers.
Since and ,
therefore,
from equation,
where, is an integer greater than .
Now, it can be seen that the L.H.S. is even and the R.H.S is odd.
Hence there is a contradiction and is irrational.
