Is log2 rational or irrational? Justify your answer.

Define rational number :

A rational number is a number, which can be written as pq, where pand q are integers , q0 and the H.C.F. of p and q is equal to 1.

Let us assume log2 is ration number, that is,

log2=pq………………………………………….equation1

where pand qare integers.

Since log1=0 and log10=1, 0<log2<1

therefore, p<q

from equation1,

2=10pq2q=(2×5)p2q-p=5p

where, q-p is an integer greater than 0.

Now, it can be seen that the L.H.S. is even and the R.H.S is odd.

Hence there is a contradiction and log2 is irrational.
