Question

Is meiosis 1 or 2 more like mitosis?

Open in App
Solution

Mitosis:

  1. It is the process by which a single cell divides into 2 identical daughter cells.
  2. This promotes growth in the body and replaces damaged cells.
  3. It is called equational division.

Meiosis 1:

  1. It is unique to germ cells.
  2. It is the type of division wherein the homologous pair of chromosomes are separated to create haploid cells.
  3. It is called reduction division.

Meiosis 2:

  1. It is the second part of meiosis.
  2. It further divides the 2 haploid cells into 2 daughter cells each.
  3. It is called equational division.

Meiosis 2 is similar to mitosis because:

  1. Both are called equational division as they involve cell division to produce 2 identical nuclei.
  2. This is done by separating one chromatid from each chromosome to produce 2 daughter cells.
